Discussion
Discover applicable methods in TriCAT spaces® and encourage exchange and discussion among participants.
World Café
Goal
The focus is on conversation and discussion, which means that knowledge is gained from a wide range of knowledge resources. Different learning types are addressed.
Room setting
Bar tables including audio zones for the respective areas
Preparation
Create a scene with the tables, including audio zones, define questions/problems, and, if necessary, write them on a whiteboard for each zone.
Each standing table deals with a specific question or problem and is supervised by a moderator. The groups of learners move from area to area and deal with the respective question or problem in each zone. Participants are encouraged to take away their most important insight from each area for themselves. Each learner decides for themselves how to record their insights (paper, whiteboard, chat, text field, drawing function).
Afterwards, the results are presented and reflected upon in a large group, guided by the moderator. Important to note: there is no right or wrong, as learning styles and interests can vary.
6 Thinking Hats
Goal
Improving communication, considering and taking into account different perspectives
Room setting
Chairs or standing tables with audio zone, alternatively a separate room
Preparation
Set up colorful chairs instead of hats, or alternatively, bar tables with colorful objects as accessories for participants, audio zones if necessary
Participants are assigned a color:
• Blue: organizing, moderating thinking, overview
• White: analytical thinking, facts
• Red: emotional thinking, feelings, subjective
• Black: criticism, risk assessment, skepticism, fears
• Yellow: optimistic thinking, opportunities, speculative
• Green: creative, associative, divergent thinking
Participants note down arguments corresponding to their position. These are presented and discussed in a joint round. Afterwards, the participants change colors and start the round again.
Jigsaw Puzzle
Goal
Learners become teachers, with the focus on mutual exchange and learning from one another
Room setting
Bar tables or circles of chairs, colored if possible
Preparation
Define the question or problem in advance, prepare seating circles or standing tables, including audio zones
The participants are divided into core groups. The next steps are explained and the individual topics are assigned (with 9 participants – 3 questions/problems). The participants work on their topic individually and then meet in their expert group with all the others who have also dealt with this topic. In the expert exchange, the participants should benefit from each other’s knowledge and exchange ideas in the best possible way. In the next step, the learners return to their core groups and contribute their newly acquired expert knowledge to the group. Each group member thus contributes expertise on a different topic.
Fishbowl
Goal
Topics are focused and condensed
Room setting
An inner and outer circle of chairs or standing
Preparation
Define the topic in advance
Participants are divided into a small inner circle and a larger outer circle. In the inner circle, they discuss the given topic with one empty seat in their ranks. Participants in the outer circle observe the discussion, but can take this empty seat at any time to participate in the discussion.
Discussion matrix
Goal
Finding compromises on complex issues
Room setting
Sufficiently large room for free installation, mark the center if necessary or use a floor matrix as a basis for installation
Preparation
Define the topic in advance, create a matrix if necessary, and divide into groups.
Participants are divided into groups, each of which works on a cell of a predefined matrix. This matrix contains topics in the rows and perspectives or aspects in the columns, which are symbolically projected onto the floor.
Each group discusses its specific area and prepares a presentation. The groups then present their results. This is followed by an open discussion to link all perspectives and develop a comprehensive overall picture. The moderator provides support.
Systemic constellation with avatars
Goal
Uncovering dynamics and relationships in existing systems and empathizing with people’s relationships, attitudes, and feelings
Room setting
Large open space
Preparation
Prepare real-life situations
The participants position themselves in the open space. Roles and briefings are distributed to simulate a real-life situation. The movements and conversations of the participants illustrate relationships and dynamics. The moderator notes down what happens.
Tip: The Perspective function can be used to select a bird’s-eye view.
Systemic constellation with objects
Goal
Uncovering dynamics and relationships in existing systems and empathizing with people’s relationships, attitudes, and feelings
Room setting
Large open space
Preparation
Prepare real-life situations
The moderator assigns meaning to the selected objects, which the participants are then asked to connect with each other. Objects are moved, sizes changed, and colors adjusted. The moderator notes down what happens.
Tip: The Perspective function can be used to select a bird’s-eye view.
